Dentures are artificial teeth and gums that are formed to your mouth and replace your lost or removed teeth. Dentures can be taken out and put back into your mouth. If you have lost all or some of your teeth, whether from gum disease, tooth decay or injury, replacing your missing teeth will bring back your smile and benefit your health. They are custom-made in our dental laboratory to closely resemble your natural teeth. While they do not feel exactly the same as your own teeth, today’s dentures are very natural looking and are more comfortable than ever.
Dentures improve your smile if you have multiple missing teeth, and they also keep the structure of the mouth intact by supporting the framework around your cheeks and lips. Dentures also make it possible for you to eat most foods to keep a healthy diet. Most of all, dentures are a good solution to replace teeth that are causing severe pain and oral health problems, such as rotted roots or other serious damage. Having dentures fitted means that troublesome teeth can be eliminated and replaced with a strong and attractive alternative.
In the past, the artificial teeth that make up dentures were made out of porcelain or plastic, but today, we make more modern dentures out of a hard resin. With proper dental care, these dentures can last from 10 to 15 years or more.
FULL DENTURES
Full dentures are made with an acrylic base, in a flesh tone, custom-made especially for your gums. Upper dentures cover the roof of your mouth, also known as your palate, whereas lower dentures make allowance for your tongue by utilizing a horseshoe shape.
PARTIAL DENTURES
A partial denture rests on a metal framework that attaches to your natural teeth. Sometimes crowns are placed on some of your natural teeth and serve as anchors for the denture. Partial dentures are made from a combination of metal and acrylic – which gives them the strength to handle your needs for chewing and speaking, while also looking natural.
IMMEDIATE DENTURES
Immediate dentures are inserted into a patient’s mouth immediately – without the need of major lifestyle changes. This kind of denture allows the individual to learn to speak and eat with their new teeth, while reducing pressure on the natural teeth that may remain. This ensures the mouth is given adequate time to heal, while awaiting a permanent set of dentures. Immediate dentures offer the advantage of walking away with a full smile, same day, rather than awaiting dentures without the aid of a temporary set.
FLEXIBLE DENTURES
For those who are new to wearing replacement teeth, flexible dentures may be an alternative to partial dentures. Made of materials such as nylon, flexible dentures feature thin thermoplastic, rather than rigid acrylic seen in full dentures – which is often thick and more obtrusive. Patients who are still wearing new replacements may find flexible partial dentures to be more comfortable, compared to full dentures. Those looking for a more natural feel, may especially appreciate partial dentures verses full, as full dentures typically show their metallic features.
